The medical world recognizes different types of arthritis according to their cause. We know the following types: infectious or septic arthritis, non-infectious arthritis forms (rheumatoid arthritis, psoriatic arthritis, juvenile idiopathic arthritis and other), and metabolic arthritis such as gout.

Non-infectious arthritis

Rheumatoid arthritis

Rheumatoid arthritis, psoriatic arthritis, and juvenile idiopathic arthritis are the most well-known examples of non-infectious arthritis diseases. The causes are, however, unknown. It is assumed that genetic predisposition can be the main cause but doctors consider stress or lingering infection to be factors as well.

Another common denominator of these diseases are disorders of the immune system. In other words, it is an autoimmune disease, where the body creates substances that subsequently damage healthy tissues, joints, muscles as well as some organs.

The course of this disease

The course of arthritis can differ significantly. The main symptom is morning stiffness that lasts over an hour after waking up. It’s easy to overlook these symptoms, but over time, a person affected by arthritis experiences pain, swelling, and inflammation. As this disease progresses, one can experience limited mobility, limb deformation (especially in the fingers, hands, etc.) and overall reduction in the quality of life.

Rheumatoid arthritis, inflammatory joint disease, most commonly affects women aged 40 and above. Inflammation usually affects small joints of the hands, wrists or ankles but can also affect big joints such as hips, knees or back. Rheumatoid arthritis affects joints symmetrically, in both arms or legs. Symptoms associated with this disease are tiredness, overall weakness, fever or lack of appetite. Rheumatoid arthritis is incurable. You can, however, successfully slow down deteriorating processes and alleviate swelling and pain.

There are multiple known methods of treatment. Pharmacological treatment- treatment that uses drugs- targets stifling of pain. Drugless forms of treatment include physical therapy such as spa or physio exercises. It is also important to alter or change diet and lifestyle accordingly.

Psoriatic arthritis

Psoriasis is a chronic lifelong skin disease. In the past, people with psoriasis were targeted and considered to be affected by leprosy. We know that psoriasis is an infectious disease that causes redness and scales. Similar to psoriasis, genetic predisposition is the main factor behind psoriatic arthritis.

Not everyone affected by psoriasis will develop psoriatic arthritis. This disease affects 10 to 20 percent of psoriatic patients. Other symptoms of psoriatic arthritis include pain, swelling of various joints in the arms, legs or back.

Infectious arthritis

Septic arthritis

Infectious arthritis - inflammatory joint disease - is caused by various kinds of bacteria and viruses such as Staphylococcus aureus.

Infection can enter the body and joints in various ways. It can be caused by a wound, injury of a joint or tissue in the joint proximity. The infection can be carried to the joint by bacteria or viruses in the bloodstream.

Puncture or joint operation can also cause an infection. Arthritis can then develop within a couple hours or days.

Main symptoms include redness, swelling, pain, and higher temperature in the affected area limiting joint mobility.

When diagnosed, it’s important to conduct blood tests to determine the cause of the inflammation followed by a drug treatment.

Metabolic arthritis

The most known cause of metabolic arthritis is gout. The reason for its metabolic cause is a high concentration of uric acid in the blood. This acid accumulates and forms crystals in the joints and tendons and causes an inflammatory reaction.

Other causes of this disease can include an unhealthy lifestyle, higher alcohol consumption, obesity and higher level of fats in the bloodstream.
